The 4 Pillars of Friends of Madagascar Development
Indigenization

This means… (click to read more)
This means the development programs in Madagascar belong to the people of Madagascar. Friends of Madagascar Development (FOMD) supports the programs with consultation and financial support, but the programs belong to the Malagasy people.
Accountability

This means FOMD requires all of our donated funds be audited each quarter and also annually by our FOMD Malagasy staff Financial Manager. We have an ongoing training program to teach accounting principles and FOMD Standards for those who manage FOMD funds. These reports are then forwarded to FOMD/USA for an in-house quarterly audit and an annual audit by a USA auditing company. We also hire a Malagasy auditing company to do an audit every other year. We call this our triple auditing procedure.
Sustainability

This means FOMD provides financial assistance in the development of the programs. The Malagasy people must then work to continue the programs through contributing financially for the continuation of the programs. The country of Madagascar is one of the poorest nations in the world and so they may develop the habit of believing they are not able to sustain the programs. Our goal is to prove that thinking is not correct and they are capable of sustaining programs. FOMD will not abandon them in their programs, but encourage greater ownership.
Benevolence

This means… (click to read more)
This means we treat each other with dignity and respect. With the language and culture differences between us, it may sometimes become difficult to understand each other; which may cause friction and distrust. Our goal is to take the time to thoroughly discuss every detail, translate all documents, and always verify.
